HFSS regulations to go ahead as planned
Despite weeks of speculation about a potential u-turn on the new regulations on the sale of products high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS), the government has now confirmed that the first stage will go ahead as planned on 1 October
The Food (Promotion and Placement) (England) Regulations 2021 intend to:
a) reduce the availability of HFSS products bought through volume promotions such as ‘buy one, get one free’. This is planned to come into effect in October 2023.
b) restrict the placement of HFSS products in high footfall areas of an affected store, such as checkouts, end-of-aisle units, store entrances and designated queueing areas. This now comes into effect on 1 October 2022.
Thousands of convenience stores in England will be affected, depending on the size of their selling space (more than 2,000 square feet) and the number of employees in their business (more than 50).
The location restrictions apply to all HFSS products, regardless of how they are promoted.
